The MET Gala 2027 already has its owner: John Galliano.

The English designer becomes the third genius of haute couture to receive this living tribute. Before him, only two names had conquered that honor: Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017.

Last year, the MET erupted in controversy. The technofeudalists invaded the red carpet: Jeff Bezos and his wife bought the event and hijacked every gaze toward a scandal alien to fashion. Many denounced that the MET had turned into a caricature. This year, controversy will once again dominate the headlines, but finally for the right reasons.

For fifteen years, Galliano has carried the weight of statements that destroyed his career in a matter of hours. His resurrection was born from the hand of one of the most iconoclastic houses on the planet: Maison Margiela opened its doors to him when no one else even wanted to look at him. It was a perfect alliance. Anonymity defines the house’s DNA, and that was exactly what Galliano needed to bury the “larger than life” character that had devoured the person.

A few months ago, Galliano signed a partnership with Zara that unleashed a massive wave of global conversation. The Spanish textile empire seeks to reinvent itself as a serious contender for haute couture, and it has chosen the most polarizing man in the world, the great provocateur forged in the British punk scene, to chart the path.

Alongside Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, Galliano completes the trio of English designers who redefined contemporary haute couture. His time at Givenchy. His golden era at Dior. His artistic peak at Margiela. Together with McQueen, he turned the runway into pure art during the close of the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s.

Four decades of reign have earned him a privileged throne in a universe that devours its own gods. Galliano suffered firsthand the ruthless commercial machinery that haute couture became. He fell into the abyss of drugs. He managed to climb out. Dior exiled him for unacceptable comments in a Parisian café. The world buried him alive, something that, curiously, never happened to Elon Musk after his controversial salute and his public rapprochement with far right groups in Europe.

Then the impossible happened. When everyone considered his career dead, Galliano was resurrected at Margiela as creative director of a house that many judged incompatible with his style. He made it his own. He invented new rules. He built a parallel universe where every show became pure theater.

Now Galliano is writing another unimaginable chapter: Zara has become his personal laboratory. The Spanish textile giant is aiming at the future and pursuing artistic heights never before imagined for the brand. Galliano seeks to reinvent fashion from within the fastest growing retail textile empire, injecting his unique and uncompromising vision into a project capable of redrawing the entire map of the industry. A brand that just a decade ago sold basic clothing now dreams of Olympus.

Galliano’s rise knows no limits. Next year, the MET Gala will pay him tribute. If Margiela already saved his life, now the MET will seek to save his reputation, just as Zara takes the definitive step toward the summit. From this moment on, the event will not be free of controversy. Nothing in Galliano’s life ever has been.
