Bombaim and Peter Brotzmann – Black Bombaim and Peter Brotzmann (2016)
By: Ghost Writer
What the fuck is
going on through Peter Brotzmann's mind? The German genius machine gun man is
all over the place lately, putting record after record of demonic noise at a
furiously insane pace, with a discography of over 100 recordings made, besides
being a free jazz top notch improviser since the 60s at the height of the
European live improvising scene, Brotzmann is no stranger to the world of experimental
music, getting near orchestral, electronic and even to rock during tenures with
his son, guitarist Casper Brotzmann, or with a bunch of other wild guys in the noise
outfit known as Last Exit, but while his work with Casper showed us both Bros
at their own throat, and with Last Exit at full noise mode, this one, made
within rock parallels is something a little more different.
Now it seems that
Brotzmann is back in full demolition mode, but way ahead of noise and more into
music combo style, getting along with Portuguese demolition jam band Black
Bombain, a trio whose improvisational skills are put to the test here, the band
excels at creating heavy grooves, rock solid enough, to being repeatedly
assaulted by Brotzmann's freight train of sound in a violent clash of sonic
titans.
You can say that
Brotzmann is the center of attention here, for a mainly solo performer, he is
perfect at melding with the crunching sounds of BB, who sound like no
beginners, with a powerful rhythm section formed by bassist Tojo Rodrigues and
drummer Paulo Goncalves, so strong that easily remind the listener of the
mighty Ashton brothers on The Stooges' proto punk all time classic Fun House,
while guitarist Ricardo Miranda is equally impressive releasing furious tongues
of spitting fire through their amps.
A brutal exercise
divided in 5 parts is presented here, in Part 1 we are received with the robust
incendiary lines of Mister Brotzmann, whose soulful saxophone lead us thru
power and passion, echoing the great Albert Ayler, Brotzmann is quickly
followed by the rest of the band, who appear hear in demolition mode, exploding
in a colorful way behind Brotzmann and easily laying a powerful groove quickly
followed by the mighty Bro, whose sound mutates in an instant to really modern
sounding soloing, the tightness of the rhythm section is remarkable here, the
perfect place for Brotzmann expanding explosions of sound, for Part 2, the
mercurial sound keeps expanding, shadows of the Stooges appear here prominently
in the bass and drum interplay of Rodrigues and Goncalves, Brotzmann applies
here strictly, his playing is pretty fluid, almost in parallel with the guitar.
For Part 3 drums
get almost on Led Zeppelinesque Bonham like stuff, guitars crash and Brotzmann
is free to deliver a powerful soloing on fire, it's amazing how good is Bro
able to match BB's attack, brutally powerful, but eminently skillful, for such
an all-out attack is amazing that both artist are able to put such a diverse
show, their music is relentless and diverse, never too monotonous, always
intense, Bro has traded density for fluidity and it pays off immensely, BB is a
perfect match for Bro's playing, they clash and the outcome is impressive, this
is undoubtedly one of the best recent recordings by Peter, is incredible that
the man keeps reinventing himself almost every recording.
