The Hateful Eight 2015

The Hateful Eight 2015

I see Tim Roth as one of the most iconic actors in the Tarantino universe, Roth was a key player of two legendary Tarantino movies, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, movies that cemented Tarantino's reputation as one of the greatest North American filmmaker of his era, the fact that Tim Roth is back on a film by Quentin might be a sign of a certain "comeback" of sorts, and that's not the only sign we get on The Hateful Eight about Quentin getting back to his roots, we might not get wise guys, or gangsters, but we are back to the times of the Civil War, where gunfights were an everyday matter, well, not to different from the current situation in the USA.

The Hateful Eight, just as Django Unchained is a Western, it started as a Tarantino idea to create, just like in Kill Bill, a sequel to Django, but it turned out in other way, this Westerns thing finally gave Tarantino a change to free his childhood obsessions with Westerns and War Epics, and here we see him employing some of his favorite rooster of actors, Tim Roth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen and Kurt Russell; The Hateful Eight could easily be seen as Tarantino, the king of pastiches of other people movies, now doing pastiches of his own movies, with Jackson and Madsen redoing their bad motherfucker roles, Madsen more closer to his role in Kill Bill, while Roth using his British accent to give his role a little particularity and Jackson doing what he knows how to do best, been a tough guy with a gun.

Russell, although not a very popular actor these days, looks wonderful on screen, larger than life and stealing the show at times from Jackson, and let's not forget newcomers Demián Bichir, Walton Goggings and Jennifer Jason Leigh, with each of them giving special features to each of his colorful characters on this part of the Tarantino universe.

The big surprise in the movie is Jennifer Jason Leigh big entrance into the Tarantino universe, in a tour de force key role that goes from word less funny to screaming bloody fury, close to the role the great Amanda Plummer played on Pulp Fiction, getting the bloodiest beating of her life, but also the role of her life, I bet a lot of people will recognize her from now on, as long as she has the black eye and the blood bath.

The "Clue game" and the "Mexican standoff", known elements of the Tarantino universe are also present on The Hateful Eight, excessive violence,  obvious blood bath and black humor are also expected elements, part of the game Tarantino plays along with his actors, gone are the stylish soundtrack, carried here mainly by the master Ennio Morricone; The Hateful Eight is not exactly a masterpiece, it stands of course well along the other films of Quentin, entertaining as hell, but as long as Westerns, perhaps Tarantino has exhausted his muse this time.
