A Democratic Puzzle About to be Solved

A Democratic Puzzle About to be Solved

By: Erreh Svaia

“One ought never to turn one's back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half. Never run away from anything. Never!
Winston Churchill

These are dark days for democracy and freedom all over the world, is not just about an election day in the USA, this is a sure sign that something must change, globally, something must be done in order to solve the puzzle we are now into, with society´s anger directed towards common politics, politicians lacking sensitivity towards popular demands, and the intervention of populists disguised as the "new far right", supposed antiestablishment figures who are willing to catch the chance of cashing in on this political and social chaos, it's no longer the left wing, populist smartly move from the left towards the right, in places like Latin America (LA) is not even well defined, is Argentinean “Peronism” left wing or right wing? Is the populist political party PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) in México left wing or right wing? In the end is fascism denouncing supposed decadence, driven by messianic almighty figures, promising a new rebirth, a new start, Europe and the USA should learn from the LA experience, how a wave of populism coming from the axis Cuba-Venezuela-Brazil created a whole movement that send LA towards the left and towards almost a decade of economic progress lost, how democracy started to fall apart in countries like Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia and Ecuador, as their leaders tried to weaken democratic systems in order to perpetuate themselves in power, they still do, it hasn't ended yet, despite big U turns in Argentina and Brazil, Venezuela and now Nicaragua are immersing in totalitarian dark waters, the Europe Union should learn that what the Sao Paulo Forum did for the left wing in LA, the Kremlin is doing in order to expand the "new right wing" within the Union in order to tear it apart, is what I used to call the dictatorship club, now disguised under “old values” and moral.

It's not the future of the world that is at stake in the USA, is the future of the world that is been at stake in almost every corner of the world in the last few years, let´s not forget Venezuela, let´s not forget Greece, let’s not forget Ukraine, let’s not forget Syria, let’s not forget Brexit, freedom is at constant danger, just think about President Rodrigo Duterte´s anti USA, and antihuman rights  policies in Philippines, driving the country more and more closer to Chinese authoritarianism, is the recent political scandal involving South Korea's president Park Geun-hye, that is debilitating the innovative oasis that is SK in the Asian region, isolating them and again, helping China's expansionism to find no proper contention in South Asia, is Recep Tayyip Erdogan taking Turkey from being one of the leading countries in the Middle East, a modern secular miracle in the middle of the "Arab Spring", and turning it into a totalitarian state, softly drifting into the obscure world of dictatorships, even blackmailing the EU in the middle of the refugee crisis.

There are some mysteries we are not yet able to solve, if the new far right in Europe will deteriorate after Trump's defeat, or will it redouble their efforts? Will North Korea restart their attacks towards the south taking advantage of SK current distractors? Will Japan and South Korea finally mend their historical differences in order to better confront China? Will China finally shut down any democratic sparkle still alive in Hong Kong? Will opposition in México defeat once again the authoritarian official party, the PRI? Will the so called Pirate Party in Iceland show us the way in order to reform and not destroy our democratic system? Will America stand together against the dictatorship in Venezuela? Will Russia and Turkey still be able to play in the shadows in order to take advantage of the USA and the Europa Union moments of distraction? There are too many questions still left for us to answer, but at least tomorrow, doubts will start to slowly disappear.
