D.A.D.-No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims (1989)
D.A.D.-No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims (1989)
By: Ghost Writer
I guess i
have written this quite a few times, 1989 was a year with too many things going
on, Bernie Sanders, USA's Democratic Party pre candidate might have changed his
beloved now defunct USSR and Nicaragua for Denmark, but in 1989 I was already
infatuated not by Danish market economy, but by their at the time unusual brand
of hard rock, as Ihad in my hands D.A.D.'s Lp No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims, it
was a prophetic record in many ways, and a bizarre record for me to listen, Lp
player broke up at the time, and I had to spin the record with my finger, I
could listen to the music, but to be fair, I had no way of knowing if I was
spinning the circle at the right speed.
The opening
riff for the first track Sleeping My Day Away sounded undeniably AC/DC ish, but
the band also threw a curious spaghetti western guitar line that gave this
strange conjunction of musical style a fresh twist, add to that the fact that their
singer sounded like a rabid beast, part Axl Rose, part Lemmy Kilmister, perhaps
the guy was a fan of the almighty Jim Dandy from the amazing Black Oak
Arkansas, the song was a mid-tempo anthem which came to a crossroads between
punk and hippie desire, the need to stay in bed, you bet either John Lennon or
Johnny Rotten would love to sing something like this.
Perhaps in
1989 was not so controversial, but speaking of Jihad and airplanes kidnapping
is a definite taboo these days, but it seems theses Danish guys where capable
of foreseeing the terrorist crisis that was about to happen, but anyway, Jihad
is a great rock song with Lemmy like vocals and great guitars, if D.A.D. didn't
became superstars with songs like these is because life is not fair, but hey,
they definitely started a trend, and opened the door for a very interesting and
vital hard rock scene about to explode in Scandinavia, one destined to save the
name of hard rock after the decline of the L.A. scene.
I remember
listening to the lyrics of Point of View and really enjoying what these guys
were singing about, finally somebody putting some really intelligent lyrics on
a rocking song, with powerful guitars and monumental drums, but the true hell
broke loose on the intense ZCMI a balls out rocker in which the singer totally
blew his throat in a song whose title definitely sounded like the name of the
ultimate hallucinating drug.
I remember
decades later the great The Darkness bringing back hard rock with AC/DC big
riffs, just check the intro to Overmuch to get a good idea of where some of
that inspiration came from, perhaps, the problem was timing, and that prevented
D.A.D. from having some of the response they truly deserved, No Fuel Left for
the Pilgrims is a brutal hard rock record with not much relation to the 90s
brand of L.A. music, but is a clear sign for the initiated of what was about to
happen in places like Sweden and Denmark in the future, The Darkness, The
Hellacopters and The Hives, here is their start.
