The Rise of the Extremist in the Heart of Europe
The Rise of the Extremist in the Heart of
Europe

“When we are tired, we
are attacked by ideas we conquered long ago.”
Friedrich Nietzsche
Last
weekend we saw again how the extreme right forces managed to capitalize the
migrant crisis right in the heart of Europe, it might not be a surprise, the
xenophobic National Front used the terrorists attacks in Paris in order to
gather a stronger following in France, they capitalized the fear, the shocking
thing here, is that this time, the extreme right wing is making its advance in
Germany, where moderation was the main policy for the almost 10 years since the
ascension of Angela Merkel as the country Chancellor, a woman who has fought
for Germany stability and endured thru really hard times.
Merkel, the
prominent politician from the CDU managed to show a more human face in the
middle of an humanitarian crisis that put the whole European Union in deep
trouble, it was Germany who set an example in giving admittance to the
thousands of refugees coming from the Middle East, but that actions seem to
have a negative effect in Germany and it's society, where xenophobic movements
like the so called Pegida are going stronger, giving a big impulse to extreme
right parties like the now triumphant AfD, with a strong showing last weekend,
a political party whose ideals are not exactly what you would call
“democratic”, and whose political advance, ironically might mean a backward
movement for the country.
AfD is a
political party born after the financial crisis in Europe, a so called Euro
Sceptic Party, they are pushing the disintegration of the European Union, opportunistically
capitalizing by her president Frauke Petry, the migrant crisis currently
destabilizing Europe and creating discontent among German society.
If
someone's plan was to weaken Angela Merkel's government by exacerbating the
migrant influx to Europe, the plan is working, if someone pretended to create
cracks in the European Union by putting the countries capacities to great
stress, is working too, the stress is also causing a worrying transformation
within European countries as chaos starts to increase society's fears, making
them easy preys of ultra-right nationalists, who are slowly gaining strength
thru the voting process, with alarming appearances in countries like Greece or
Slovakia, and helping governments and societies to become more authoritarian
and to accept a reduction in human freedom and rights respectively.
Merkel
administration has just received a warning, a big yellow card, as in France,
society is becoming more and more polarized and desperate, a situation not
favorable for moderation, Merkel's potential successor Julia Klöckner is not
having an easy time neither as the future of the Christian Democratic Union is
entering tough time with important triumphs in previous considered conservative
territories by the SPD, finally the xenophobic populist virus has arrived to
the heart of Europe, it's time for Merkel to really show what the European
Union has done for Europe's and the world's peace, is time to take a more
dynamic stance in order to make more advances in the integration of the
migrants and their quick development as the new blood for an aging nation, a
nation that has been the locomotive of the EU, the EU should not disappear, nor
fragment, it has proved to be a successful enterprise to secure Europe's peace
now is time to demonstrate its value to assimilate more people into the system
in a democratic way in order to assure a better future for the whole continent.
Merkel´s greatest battle is just about to begin.
