Misfits- Earth A.D. (1983)

Misfits- Earth A.D. (1983)

I must have been like 10 years old, I can't remember well, as many young guys I learned about Misfits from looking at Metallica's t-shirts, it must have been the best marketing campaign ever for the small horror punk band from New Jersey, the Misfits disbanded in 83, my first Misfits record was Earth A.D., a small black cassette, for Glenn's band, it was their last, a blinding fast little hardcore punk record, it was a quite disorienting noisy affair with Glenn's amazing vocals on top of it, musically it was gar removed from previous old rock n roll influenced punk rock records, Earth A.D. was just as shocking as the band's visuals were, from the title track blasting onslaught, it was obvious that the band was about to explode, buy what a glorious way of doing it.

Queen Wasp was another fast burner, but it had that swing from 50s rock and roll records, you could hear Elvis filtered thru Danzig deep baritone vocals and the band's urgent trademark scream "GO!", Devilock, an ode to the band's outrageous hairdos, and a living proof of the amazing stamina of legendary drummer Robbo, a regular of another legendary hardcore band, Black Flag, whose house producer, Spot, was behind the mixing board on this record, sounding this way wasn't a mere coincidence, the Misfits wanted to sound as brutal as they could, and they did, but in the middle of it, there was Death Comes Ripping, an indicator of where the band was aiming, a rabid mix of punk and metal guitars, along with the anthemic Gren Hell, it was a clear call to arms to kids like Metallica in order to bring down the barriers between punk rock and heavy metal.

The second part of the album was an even louder, more furious and evil one, a whirlwind of sound on tracks like Demonomania, short and concise, or Bloodfeast, again with the band branching out towards metal, and then the hyper fast rock and roll of Hellhound, and if that wasn't enough to leave you vanquished, the record closes with the glorious Die, Die My Darling a total classic, and the all-out explosion named we bite, Earth A.D. is far from a perfect album, is the Misfits at their uglier and most repulsive, but at the same time, playing truly as if their lives, or deaths depend of it, now, after 33 the band has reunited with Glenn for a show almost on my birthday, it was a dream come true, they are even talking about making a record with Glenn, Jerry Only, Doyle and the amazing drumming of Slayer's Dave Lombardo, amazing!
