Anarchy in the UK
Anarchy
in the UK

“Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to
continue that counts.”
Winston Churchill
So, British Prime
Minister Theresa May though calling elections in the UK would be helpful to strengthen
her government? I guess its becoming a common factor, arrogance is defeating
politicians everywhere, shamefully enough, it seems that May didn’t learn the
lesson from her antecessor David Cameron, who called for a referendum on
Brexit, and lost, even his job, now it´s May turn, she has put her job on
peril, she bet everything and lost, lost the overall majority of her
Conservative Party on the Parliament and while she aimed to concentrate more
power in order to go hard on the Brexit negotiations, she lost power and
cohesion, and will have to go along in coalition with the Democratic Unionist
Party of Ireland, a position that will leave her weakened and demanding her a
more conciliatory role, a perfect situation for Labor Party leader Jeremy
Corbyn to seize the chance and became a pain in the ass for May, yes, I know it’s
hard to learn from other´s people mistakes.
Ironically, May is
becoming the latest casualty of the “Trump Phenomenon”, as we have watched the disastrous
defeats of people like Gert Wilders in the Netherlands and then Marine Le Pen in
France, national populists who jumped on the Trump bandwagon expecting to
become heads of government in their respective countries, and apparently,
considering the dramatic decline in popularity of Trump, is not hard to
conclude that Trump is dragging all of them as he stumbles, May might be the
last one, as she pursued a more statistic and illiberal direction in her administration,
it seems that the strategy backfired leaving her in a diminished state on the
road towards the Brexit nomination.
Perhaps is a
little adventurous to declare this as a Jeremy Corbyn triumph, but he will be
able to become a more powerful figure on the UK´s Parliament bringing populist´s
hard rhetoric to the debates and putting finally an end to the Tony Blair era
of Left Centre politics, bringing on some more extreme left wings politics to
the table, Corbyn, a populist anomaly in the Labor Party, is another lost piece
of the Bolivarian puzzle Latin America seem to have exported to Europe, as we
have witnessed recently the rise (and fall) of Alexis Tsipras in Greece, Pablo
Iglesias in Spain, Jean Luc Mélenchon in France, raising considerations as a possible
reformed version of the movement inspired by Cuban, Sandinista and Chavista
politics happening in Europe, Corbyn is a little extremist character, having
both a fascination with separatist movements like the IRA in Ireland, Hezbollah
and Hamas in the Middle East and Chavismo in Venezuela, and considering his
resurgence in this elections, might also give oxygen to the forgotten “American
socialist” Bernie Sanders, who played a similar role to Corbyn, challenging the
status quo inside the Democratic Party the USA, Corbyn´s advances in the UK
might revitalize Sanders in a moment when Trump is annihilating himself, but
the opposition hasn’t been able to become a coherent movement against The
Donald, but also Corbyn, the admirer of Hugo Chávez could become a curse and
another blow on Mexican Populist Andrés López, leader of the MoReNa Party, and
a close friend of Corbyn, who has recently been accused in Mexico of being
associated with the Venezuelan dictatorial government.
Only time will
tell the real outcome of the risky movement by May, but it can announce an uncomfortable
position for the UK government during the Brexit negotiation, paradoxically
here, Brexit became a window of opportunity wide open for the national
populist, and now again in the UK, the defeat of May might be a sign that the
window is finally open (consider now that main Brexit instigators, the UKIP were totally despised on the elections, and main leader Nigel Farage is suspected on the USA as working for the Kremlin during the USA elections) , it was a significant triumph of the younger generations,
who finally defeated the older generations who voted for the Brexit.
