When it was publicly announced that the U.S. and Cuba were in the middle of a process in order to reestablish their relations, torn apart at the height of the Cold War, it seemed possible that a better integration in America, from Alaska to the Patagonia was possible with countries in the region getting away from ideology and openly embracing pragmatism, it was a small window, but a real one.

Obama's outside politics gave America a big hope for integration, but those were actions that without a doubt sparkled a similar on the conservative sector of the U.S., it started with contrary opinions developing in the Senate, pressure from groups like the Tea Party and the anti-immigrant postures of people like Rick Perry, governor of Texas and Marco Rubio, a possible presidential candidate for the Republican Party, but those radical postures were weakened by the weight of the Latin sector in the U.S., Jeb Bush, another potential candidate with a more tolerant view on the subject seemed like the right option for the Republicans to conciliate conservative and immigration policies, but then suddenly the unexpected happened, Donald Trump, a mediatic tycoon entered the electoral game and put himself as the least potential and more extreme positioned of the Republican candidates, Trump not only insulted immigrants and Mexico, he charged against other minorities, against veterans and against women, the logical thing was to consider this a politics suicide for Trump, but in difficult times like the ones we live in, became fertile ground for populist, anti-establishment and against the system figures rising against al logical bets, a world phenomenon happening all over the world, as crises served as a detonator of people most desperate and irrational instincts quickly capitalized by this ambitious, authoritarian and extreme characters.

Months ago, considering Trump as a serious contender was crazy, today, he heads the polls and his strength as candidate and popularity looks unstoppable, not only becoming a serious menace to the other Republican candidates, but to potential candidates from the rival Democratic Party, it's still unreal to think of Trump as the elected Republican candidate, but as polls show, U.S. politics  are living in a David Lynch movie, and the is happening, and unfortunately it seems that a world lead by Putin, Trump, Tsipras, Marine Le Pen, Pablo Iglesias, Nicolas Maduro, Silvio, Berlusconi, Andres Manuel Lopez, Jaime Rodriguez, Evo Morales, Rafael Correa, Cristina Fernadez and the Islamic State is not so far from becoming a reality.

People are slowly been lead to believe that strong willed authoritarian all mighty figures should dictate our future in order to straighten our mediocre democracies, but in the end, I think whatever we expected, democracy is not perfect and is not a definite solution to all problems as we want to think, democracy evolves and moves slowly, and it's not about who makes a huge amount of unreal promises, it is not a popularity, hot headed big mouth or a strongman contest, it's about choosing in a rational way the candidate less prone to cause damage and after that keeping him well checked and supervised, and that’s the job of every responsible citizen.
