Mexico´s Big Chance
Mexico´s Big Chance

Our big chance is education, the enormous quantity of resources within the country has become a curse, and we are also cursed with a corrupted and ambitiously perverse political class that makes personal profit out of them, preaching about distribution of richness, but never really taking action, but don’t lie to ourselves, oil is not the big trampoline for economic development, it is a big curse today on countries like Russia, Brazil, Venezuela and Nigeria, who all bet on it, but the bet on education that countries like South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Finland and Chile has nearly taken them all from third world, to become world class leaders, it’s a safe bet, but it takes time, it takes years to change the whole educational system from within, a complete transformation of it might take 10 or 15 years, and that is a period of time no politician would consider useful for their next campaign in 4 or 6 years, that’s why politicians prefer to use highways, dams and bridges, even Olympics or World Cups as their “big achievements” to cash in on the next elections, but this awful choice and terrible lack of vision keeps us without the chance to move forward, because a non-educated population is an easy prey, defenseless as a little child, always in need of an all provider “protector”, a government that gives them everything “for free”, and given the fact that is “free” you can question the quality of it.
Mexico´s big bet should be on education, but our government likes always to play it safe and dumb, that´s why, private investors are the ones who should open their eyes and dare in order to win, yes, a bad educated population makes a very cheap work force, but it also keeps us from becoming a synonym of quality, it keep us away from creating and designing and develop added value to production, cheap work force also works in favor of oligarchy, complacency and mediocrity, it´s a death trap, it asphyxiates the country and makes no good place for the Elon Musks or Richard Bransons, that’s why we only have abusive tycoons like Carlos Slim or Ricardo Salinas (our oligarchs), who benefit from monopolies and corruption and try to maintain the status quo.
Many politicians brag about being fearless governors, and here is their big chance to prove it, along with the people and without fear of retrograde teacher’s union, social pressure can do wonders and work better than president bland intentions, worried about the political cost of such actions, I want to hear about a politician without fear of betting on education, without fear of investing on really high quality, world class education, without the possibility of not being recognized by it on elections, but being recognized by history and by future generations, and by a country that could be better qualified to brake the static, and to really enter world dynamics, that understands that is not about building more schools and gathering more teachers, but about raising the quality of education and having better skilled teachers, to be really productive it´s not about having too much teachers, but to have better ones who can teach more children in an intelligent way, it´s about opening our schools to the world, to connect the children with the outside world, and to connect the country with technology and science, to understand the importance of English, not as a tool for imperialism, but as a tool for commerce, for business, a big window to the outside world via the internet, the chance to learn by ourselves.
This is the reform that Mexico really needs, this is the most important of all the resources the country has: The human resource and the WORKING MIND, not working force, so Mr. President, governors, and politicians, are you really willing to show us that you love Mexico, and that you are fearless? This is the way.
