Norylsk-Catholic Dictatorship (2015)
“Character is power.”

I certainly
miss those old days of Grindcore mania when Napalm Death and Carcass gave us a
perfect escape from the “too clean and technical” Florida school of Death Metal,
in a way, grindcore before Black Metal was our escape valve from more and more
polished and sterile stuff coming those days from the Morrisound Studios, at a
time when original brutal Death Metal like Death or Obituary where looking for
more progressive sounds, I really miss the guttural interplay of legendary
Napalm Death singer or growler, Lee Dorrian and drummer Mick Harris, with
Dorrian's low guttural growls and Harris' night pitched witch like screams, it
was a thrilling and outstanding dynamic, that and obviously the music greatly
evolved to perfection when the Mentally Murdered EP came out in 1989, the once all-time
radical band was maturing its sonic attack, I guess to many things happened
that year, and also that perfect classic line up of the mighty ND simply disbanded
after that recording.
For those like me who are sometimes hit by grindcore nostalgia, Poland's Norylsk is a great band to listen to, composed mostly of the clue elements that made ND so good in the first place, incredible fast beats, industrial strength guitars and the bestial growling dynamic, FKK, the album´s opener even exhibits that great blast beat dynamic of the mighty band form Birmingham, but this time transported to beautiful Poland, and as so many of you know I have this thing towards east Europe, with too many good things coming from that region, and this band is no exception.
Powerful bass and drums interplay is showcased in Product of Lobotomy and high pitched screams that quickly bring us to mind the great blasting performance of the legends Human Tornado aka Mick Harris, when he was noisier and before his started his career as Avant garde artist in Scorn pioneering ambient metal among other things.
These Polish guys continue with their merciless attack on Potential and Flesh a tune so well-crafted with its powerful drumming, monstrous vocals and perfect synchronized guitars, in a form of brutal extreme metal attack so precise that is executed in very short minutes, it is quickly followed for the all blasting Mental Alienation.
Norylsk might not be the most original act in the planet, I guess I must say that they are pretty derivative form the genres early bands and their walk into maturity, but they play in a way that everything else matters nothing, is the precision of its attack, the conviction and power they display, that make this great Polish act a band that you all shouldn't miss, and I ask myself once again, What the hell is going on in Poland that so many awesome bands come from there?
