Twilight- III:
Beneath Tridents Tomb (2014)
Twilight might not be my favorite USA BM band, considering the idea of a
BM super group simply kind of works against what BM is all about to me they
were an ok band, but not a great one, not in the way of great bands like
Abruptum, Mayhem, Burzum, Wolves In the Throne Room, or Xasthur, but what might
be interesting about Twilight is their desire to try something else, to survive
in a rather mediocre scene by taking some weird chances, what about inviting
noise master Thurston Moore to see what happens? And put on the table if really
Moore is a fan of BM as he has widely announced.
Son in a way III: Beneath Tridents Tomb is a definitive statement, it
has been announced to be Twilight last recording on this earth, and I must add
is definitely one of its weirdest and most interesting one, working almost like
a non BM album, but as something else, you name it.
Opener Lungs from second one erupts with guitar noise, laid back drums
and a certain affinity toward drone, its sets itself apart from polished black
metal and falls in a strange dimension involving extreme metal, noise, hardcore
and I don’t know what else, drumming is sloppy, but it obviously adds great
effect, almost getting close to industrial metal, with a great hell of a mixing
in the vocal department, close to the anguish screams of hells eternal victims,
never falling into the clichés of fake or traditional BM, this records really
fights to find its own place among extreme music, one that’s almost bestial,
organic and escaping all categorization, Oh Wretched Son has menacingly looped
guitar lines, building endless lines before being evaporated in the air, and
under the heavy weight of a very competent and solid drumming, What’s exactly
Moore’s input here? It might be hard to discern, but he really makes this
record sound different form BM or form Twilight previous records, his noise
technique applied to guitar gives new routes to Twilight brutality, it gives
the music chance to transform, mutate and become something hallucinogen,
something toxic and even closer to hardcore punk or crust rather than BM or
Death Metal, even when they fall into the blast beat trap, their guitars work
in endless textural ways making this recording something else.
Swarming Funereal Mass starts with an almost doom intro crossing over
with Moore`s amazing outside of this world guitars, what could be a simple
Black Sabbath influenced doom tune ends up becoming the equivalent of Lasse
Marhaug teaming up with Sunn O))), with Moore giving a completely new edge to
Twilight`s brand of BM, a more dark noise sound with tortured vocals, evoking
at times the dungeon ambience of the GREAT Abruptum here, although this time
not exactly in Scandinavia, but in some decadent apartment in Germany or a
small house in the American gothic lands, eerie and scary all the way, a great
canvas of darkness in which Moore seems more than efficient in letting his evil
Jackson Pollock come out in a really mad way.
Again Seek No Shelter Fevered Ones, Twilight let Moore become their
guide into darkness, they create a great world of sounds, shadows and noise, a
big dark cosmic force comes into life, something close to the monstrous Chutulu
of the maniacal Lovecraft stories, a creature with a terrific life all of its
own screaming form the bowels of hell.
Drone makes its triumphant and malevolence debut in such a big way in A Flood Of Eyes, again a creeping creature making its way crawling across the
floor, and unstoppable creature from hell claiming from victims, although this
time Moore dynamics are put in a more generous display, that makes us recognize
Moore`s enormous talent evident thru this hellish miasma, changing the DNA of
Twilight forever, elevating the recording into a pure evil noise glory path
that sets this record apart from typical BM “experimental” recordings, as the
bizarre intro to Below Lights shows this “wild bunch” really trying to be
something else, industrial beats, ultra crunching guitars and defiant vocals
make way to a really outrageous tune, making me think is a shame that once
Twilight has achieved this form it has to end, the band have achieve a truly
amusing identity thanks to Moore, they sound inspired to be something else, something
more animal and evil than most current BM bands, this is the sounds of evil
getting really interesting, so enjoyed this time, because it could be their
last.
