No, I don't
consider Cradle of Filth a black metal band, although of course the band has
benefited a lot from associating themselves to that Scandinavian dark
phenomenon, this British obscure guys have taken a lot from black metal image
and sound but they have creates their own niche integrating some other elements
making their musical approach much more accessible to the masses thus
precipitating their commercial appeal in a way that some of the more hardcore
fans of BM have become offended by COF success.
Hammer of Witches bring nothing new except an excellent set of intense tunes again bringing forth some of the best things this band is capable of doing, combining some of the aforementioned elements with death metal technical prowess and technical ability along with gothic classical arrangements in order to create something equivalent to Mercyful Fate early legendary musical endeavors.
From the start there's no doubt that the recording is an amazing and intense tour through some of the best extreme euro metal available this days, COF might be the world's biggest BM posers, but they are definitely great extreme metal players, and the powerful and complex Yours Immortally is quite a strong proof of it, ear splitting guitars, hair rising screams and vertigo inducing beats, the band is S awesome cumulus of energy, keyboards may distract a bit from the raw power of the songs but they do wonders adding atmosphere to each theme, Enshrined in Crematoria is another outstanding piece with vertiginous speed and great sense of melody, more closer to the world of Death Metal than to BM.
Sheer brutality and pure evil cones thru the speakers on Blackest Magik in Practice another great tune with metal thrashing mad rhythms and flesh carving guitars that remind me of the melodic intensity once reached by the mighty Carcass, and given the fact that both bands are British the comparative might not be too hard to understand, Hammer of Witches the title track shines with pure epic force and reminds me a but if highly technical BM bands like late period Emperor, while on themes like Right Wing of the Garden Triptych the band is all on their own furious gothic sound world with elements of BM and the more experimental Celtic Frost.
Hammer of Witches is a powerful metal manifestation, conceived with power, grace and fury, showing that COF is a band depending fully on their talent, and that image although appealing, is not the reason this band is still hanging around, the reason is that they make great brutal records.
