Sexennial Day

I remember
when many spoke of the "presidential tone" that they saw in Trump at
the end of his campaign and that they also assured was a sign that his attitude
would moderate once elected, for those of us who saw the current president of
Mexico, Andrés López in the campaign and during the weekend, we have witnessed
that far from becoming a pragmatic and conciliatory politician, we have found
the equivalent to the audio book of his publication entitled The Exit, in which
we find a proposal of a statist nature, in which, as expected, it is the
statement that the State will be the main actor of the next sexennium, we see a
politician who lacks the pragmatism that many sought to assign him and that in
reality, has nothing of it, far from announcing himself as an official who
would seek conciliation, we saw an official that like Trump, will continue in
campaign and will continue with the fashion strategy within the populists, the
polarizing, the "divide and conquer" , once again came to light the
favorite "imaginary" enemy of the opposition populist actors of
recent years, be it Trump, Le Pen, Erdogan, Maduro, etc., "neoliberalism"
is the culprit of everything, this is still without defining or correctly
identifying this "ghost", considering that Lopez still talks about
free trade (he supported the signing of the new version of the NAFTA), they
spoke of an austere government, and in addition they even touched on the issue
of reducing taxes, in a few words, it seems that they really want to do what is
supposed to be dictated by neoliberalism, and if they fail, they may be labeled
by their successors as "neoliberalists", this is the play on words
that López seems to use to get his followers into a trance.
It was
announced what seemed obvious, a return to the times of the old "PRI
System" in which all power is subordinated to the president, which is
nothing healthy for the democratic and economic life of the country, although
for the disciples of the economist Dani Rodrick, the only way out is to return
to the past, the rebirth of that state religion known as the nationalism that
for years has become a burden for the world, but that at the first opportunity
and the first strong wobble of globalization, have exploited to seize power and
establish their own protectionist version of the world today, the other great
tragedy could be the emphasis on the use of the Armed Forces to establish a
safer country, if for two sexennia was severely criticized the use of the army
in labor security, now seems to become one of the axes of the new government,
the brazen use of the army and its involvement in an almost ideological issue of
control and shock in the life of the country ahead, a dangerous element if we
consider that for decades the army has remained outside the political life of
the country, and this has kept us away from events such as military dictatorships
in Chile, Cuba, Brazil , Argentina or Venezuela.
The
unfortunate spectacle of seeing the former president on the "bench of the
defendants", purging a momentary sentence in exchange for his exoneration
of any subsequent investigation, by Lopez, a congratulation to the
administration of Peña that says "did not put his hands in the election"
although it seems that he has forgotten the harassment on one of the candidates
in particular, which was even accused of money laundering, but the reality is
that in a scenario that seems to return to the so-called "Imperial
Presidency", society and country are not the same of that era, to close
the economy in the current global scenario would be a blatant suicide, even and
that the promise has been to give priority to the paternalistic and welfare
system, in an interconnected world in which the events in Spain, Ukraine or
China affect us equally, the return to that idyllic past that López longs for
is not possible, ruling against the markets is impossible, putting all the
weight of industry back into the oil sector would be a serious mistake if we
look at the case of countries like Venezuela, and the mere idea of economic
decision-making for political reasons will undoubtedly shake up foreign
investment that will flee to other places that inspire more confidence, the
place to accommodate the old "PRI System" no longer exists, and the
return to Lopez's past implies a break with the passage of Mexico last six
years, even that Lopez yearned for that "Imperial Presidency" a false
step away from the huge number of promises and utopias held during his first
day as president, will make you quickly reduce the power that also managed to
concentrate in a fleeting manner, this is the new world, yesterday he was
anti-system and today he is part of the mafia of power, a false step and that
power can vanish, and the resistance is just beginning.
