After what will
happen in the Turkish-Syrian borderline, when a Russian sonic airplane was shot
down by the Turkey Air Forces?, Who knows what will happen after a Middle East
conflict has escalated to worldwide levels? Europe, and Middle East seem to be
on the verge of war with many parts involved, and world peace once again is in
a very weak position.
But what
get us here is music this time, and
that's what these Russian guys named Mörkersida know really well how to make
it, Mörkersida is a four piece from Rybinsk, Russia, their music belongs to the crust punk
genre, and they have a new record called
Parasite that is out to make big impressions these days.
Russia has
a quite interesting tradition in punk, starting with the great Egor Letov and his
Grazhdanskaya Oborona, a legendary runaway act, highly prolific in KGB's times
that spawned a lo fi punk rock legacy in times when rock in Russia, and
specially, punk was almost impossible to play in Soviet lands, Letov somehow
managed to create lots of lo fi recordings,
most of them played and recorded by himself, that would become the base of some really
exciting raw music.
Mörkersida
has its obvious ties to Crust Punk, it is raw and fast as hell, with obvious
connections to the most raw black metal you can imagine and Motorhead’s mighty
sound, these four guys play very primitive and scary stuff, just like good old
Motorhead, they sound like a train at full speed without brakes, a suicidal
convoy with a mission to crash at full speed on its objective.
Starting
with the dark bass lines in Modern Day Slavery,
and guitar riffs that at times remind me of the hellish Hellhammer, the band quickly forgets about intros and
ride on their steel horse in a crazy,
maniac race, abrasive guitars and
ultra-fast drums dominate the mix, with
Arthur inhuman vocals leading the attack, the influence of the amazing
Discharge sometimes come to the front,
but the bad sounds hell bent on creating their own horrific
personality, great tunes like the
intense rock of Rotting World comes next,
a great and intensely athletic work comes from drummer Heyner, but guitars also have their big chance on the
razor sharp attack of Grim Reaper's Dance,
another whirlwind of sound with the band in top shape here.
Crust Punk
might be a little exhaustive, as the
bands embark sometimes in really monotonous displays of energy, but these Russians really know how to keep
things rolling and how to keep things interesting, and that's precisely what happens in tunes
like Same Old Shit, or the heavier than
thou Scum Pit, with the band upping the
intensity level in a considerable way, with their guitar riffs even getting
deeper in a song like Columbine, even
tackling delicate subjects, closing with
the great rocking theme serving as title track that really shows what this band
is all about, intensity, horror and rock n roll at dangerous levels in
the complex Russia of Putin.
