Sad Breakfast- (2005-2006)
“If you want to be a
rock star or just be famous, then run down the street naked, you'll make the
news or something. But if you want music to be your livelihood, then play,
play, play and play! And eventually you'll get to where you want to be.

Yes,
Iceland has Sigur Ros, Scotland has Mogwai, Canada has Godspeed You Black
Emperor!, Texas has Explosions in the Sky and even Japan has Mono, here in
México we have Sad Breakfast, well we had Sad Breakfast.
Sad
Breakfast started in Mexico City in the year 1998, the band was inspired by the
post rock movement of the rim, but they weren't exactly instrumental like most
post rock acts, in fact, lyrics and vocals played a big part in the sound of
the band, as Josúe Guijosa's nostalgic slacker vocals were an important feature
n the overall approach of the band, laid back rhythm section, ringing guitars
and Guijosa early morning lyrics told tales of past events and better times.
The Time…To
Come back were a pair of Eps issued between 2005 and 2006, I found The Time in
a record shop, I didn't knew anything about the band, didn't even knew they
were Mexican, but their name had a strange effect on me, I bought the CD, and
when I arrived home, no CD was inside the card box, I returned it to the record
shop and they gave me a new one, the music sounded quite different to the music
been made at the time in the country, they were obviously listening a lot to
the so called post rock, at the time I was a by fan I bands like Sigur Ros,
Tortoise and Slint, not so much else, but SD immediately became one of my
favorite bands, from opener Nonesense, However.. Still Far Away, that showed
that the band nit cared too much for relevant lyrics, they were more like
puzzled memories from the past and that was really interesting to me, Guijosa
was a voice from the past coming to haunt you, while the music gleamed with
singular energy, they weren't direct at all as they moved in endless circles of
sound.
Falling was
more energetic and straight rock song with an infectious guitar riffing, a
definite rock groove and a powerful bass that glues it all together, while on
Changing Places there a great furious guitars latter succeeded by ringing ones
and a great tender vocal execution by Josúe, in a very strong performance
that's definitely show stealing.
What made
SD better than most post rock bands is that ay heart they kept a rock n roll
beat going on, a great add on to Guijosa proto slacker vocals like on the
superbly titled Memories for the Last Two Times, We Believed We Grew Up, a
devastating tune for the soul, or What can be said against the incendiary
Remember that You Forgot with Guijosa painful vocals at the very top and a
heart wrenching and effective guitar line.
Several
Minutes showed moments of great dynamics interlocked with hitting riffs and
brutal bass lines, the band going here for a more instrumental approach.
Sad
Breakfast lasted for some good 15 years, comebacks have been announced but no
new music, anyway I really cherish this great siamese eps, and a gray band
without much massive acceptance but with a legion of musician followers who
keep their blurred memory alive.
