Almost Halloween, obsessed with Kate Bush and Evan Dando.
The cold has finally arrived in Monterrey (Although in Monterrey, the weather changes from one day to the next). It’s time to bring out the winter clothes, which I love (Those second hand Margiela style sweaters). I love having a croissant and black coffee in the morning (from Tim Hortons), even though I try to stay away from bread. Those of us addicted to pastries must keep our distance as much as possible. But for us coffee addicts, there’s no hope, let’s keep going. I recommend a high protein breakfast. Eggs, preferably, but on mornings like today, bread and coffee are perfectly fine.
I’ve been constantly listening to the British singer Kate Bush (Hounds of Love, please), I’m mildly obsessed with her music. It’s clear that artists like Björk and Rosalía have drawn inspiration from her. I once read that John Lydon, formerly Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, said he felt he belonged in the same category as Bush (and perhaps Yoko Ono). Well, Bush was a close collaborator of David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. Lydon, of course, was famous for his “I Hate Pink Floyd” T shirt, though like many British punks of that era, he idolized Syd Barrett, the band’s original leader.
Another thing I’m currently obsessed with is Barbarian, the horror film by Zach Cregger. Barbarian is an extraordinary horror movie. Cregger is a genius of the genre, his films are terrifying, original, and disruptive. He knows how to deliver narrative shocks and, above all, he plays cleverly in that strange middle ground between horror and comedy (just like the great Osgood Perkins). I strongly recommend watching Barbarian and Weapons, both are masterpieces of the genre. I’ve seen Barbarian three times in one week. The ending, set to “Be My Baby,” is absolute cinema, as Scorsese would say, both terrifying and deeply moving.
Tomorrow is Halloween. I love Halloween, unlike Christmas, which I can’t stand (thanks to my parents...), it has a fun, joyful vibe. The last four months of the year are my favorite, except for Christmas. There’s always a kind of nostalgia and sadness I feel around those days that hits me hard (yes, again, because of my parents...). I have amazing memories of Halloween, it might just be my favorite day of the year.
I just finished reading the autobiography of Evan Dando, the frontman of The Lemonheads, and I absolutely loved it. Dando is fascinating (just as spectacular as his great new album Love Chant). I wish the book never ended so I could keep reading him forever. It surprised me in the same way Dave Grohl’s The Storyteller did, both Dando and Grohl are remarkable storytellers. Lately, I’ve been hooked on autobiographies and biographies, you learn so much by stepping into someone else’s mind.
I decided to start writing more personal and introspective pieces from time to time, just to open up a bit more. Today was back and chest day at the home gym (just like Shaun Clarida, who deserved to win at the Olympia this year). I love exercises like pull ups and weighted dips, when done properly, they’re incredible. Tomorrow’s Friday, and Halloween. I’m so excited. Today I wore my shirt that says: Haddonfield, Illinois, Halloween 1978, for the true horror film experts out there.
